Use a clean, sharp blade. Place the blade in piping hot water, let it sit, his will improve the cutting edge. Newer blades require less force to cut through the hair therefore using less pressure with a new blade, will reduce the risk of nicks, cuts and razor burn. Dull blades increase the likely hood of ingrown hairs. Also rinse blade in hot water to remove any residue this will improve the longevity of your blade.
Wash your face with a face wash or scrub with warm water to remove dirt from the hair and skin, and to allow whisker softening to occur. Or better yet, shave after a warm shower when hair is fully saturated with water, this will help with softening the whiskers.
This is the most important procedure, apply a thick layer of shaving cream or gel, and allow it to sit on skin for approximately two to three minutes. This keeps moisture on the skin to enhance softening and helps reduces friction caused by the razor going over the skin's surface. It also enables you to see the area already shaved.
Remember to shave in the direction of hair growth, always keeping the skin taut at all times. (Eg. Pull to the north, shave to the south) Take your time and shave carefully over sensitive areas. For a closer shave, carefully shave against the grain of hair growth but always reapply shave cream or gel first.
Immediately rinse with cold water to close the pores and remove any traces of shave cream or lather.
Complete your shaving regimen with a moisturiser to soothe the skin and help with closing the pores. Skin can be irritated by the alcohol found in many aftershave splashes which tends to burn the skin, so use a cream or gel moisturiser for your skin.
